I’m getting a lot of questions about this site, so I’ve decided to set up this FAQ page, which I will add to as and when necessary.
- Does a website like yours require a lot of work to manage?
You can put in as much or as little work as you want to, but experience suggests that your posts need to be regular if you want people to follow them. It’s no good bombarding people with posts for a couple of months during an initial burst of enthusiasm only to lose interest afterwards and post nothing for the next year.
A few basic pointers:
- Write about things that really interest you.
- Do your own research and writing.
- Give value.
- Use clear and simple language wherever possible.
- What platform do you use?
As you may or may not know, one third of the sites on Internet are powered by WordPress, and this is what I am using. It’s a platform particularly well-adapted to blogs and regular posting. But be careful: there are two types of WordPress.
WordPress.com is for bloggers who don’t have their own site but who want to write posts without the hassle and expense of creating their own site. They have a page which is hosted by WordPress itself and the layout is pretty standard.
WordPress.org on the other hand requires you to have your own site, which means owning a domain and hosting your site with a provider. The advantage of this is that you have control over your content and how it’s presented. You can choose from different themes, customise them and make different types of pages. This is the kind of WordPress platform I have.
